The Japanese Representative Office Celebrates the Completion of Two Grassroots Projects supporting Basic Human Needs in the West Bank
Today on October 4, 2010, the completion ceremonies of two projects were held respectively in Halhul city in Hebron Governorate and Abu Dis town in Jerusalem Governorate. Mr. Hideaki Yamamoto, Deputy Representative of Japan to the Palestinian Authority and the representative of each grant recipient organization in addition to some representatives from the relevant PA ministries attended each ceremony. These projects were funded by the Government of Japan in March 2010, through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
With the fund of USD 96,960, Palestinian Hydrology Group implemented the project for constructing rain water collecting cisterns in eight basic and secondary schools in Hebron Governorate with a capacity of 100 m³ for each cistern. The construction of these eight cisterns, in addition to the water awareness training program that PHG will provide to students and teachers, will ensure the access to safe water for about 4,000 children learning in these rural communities who suffered from water shortage as they are not connected to the water networks, and thus contribute to achieving appropriate educational environment.
Under the same GGP scheme, the amount of USD 52,680 was granted for SOS Children Village Bethlehem to implement the project for strengthening SOS mobile clinic. The grant was utilized to buy a new trailer to move the mobile clinic around West Bank areas in addition to equipping it with diagnostic set with electric coach for psychiatric examination. Through this project, SOS is able to operate mobile psychiatric medical services more efficiently and provide skilled health professionals to marginalized communities in West Bank with fewer burdens.
Since the inception of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in 1993 in Palestine, Japan has provided funding GGP assistance to more than 300 projects with a total value of approximately 21 million US dollars, which is a part of Japan’s total assistance to the Palestinians exceeding USD 1 billion.
Mr. Yamamoto in his speeches expressed that the Japanese Government is determined to continue its support to Palestinian people from human security perspective as well as from its political stands in order to contribute to their efforts to establish a viable independent Palestinian state and to strengthen local institutions to provide basic daily services to people.
